Ouya Naked and Jelly Bean

The team behind the $99 game console is quietly working on an Android update and early developer hardware. The tiny console will now ship with Android Jelly Bean instead of Android ICS.
A nice step forward becouse Jelly Bean's user interface is faster than ICS's.
It’s not clear whether that’s Jelly Bean 4.1, as has been out for a while now, or Jelly Bean 4.2 which was made official on Monday.

Ouya naked to seduce you

Additionally, over 60,700 backers have submitted usernames to the Ouya team and they’re now working hard to get everyone set up with their accounts, months ahead of the console’s launch.

So, It seems that everything is going so well and that is good.

Oh, and if you are a Dev, look at How to Get Started on OUYA Now

Ouya: Under the hood of the $99 console

Ouya’s hardware engineer Muffi Ghadiali discusses the inner workings of Ouya’s hardware and addresses criticisms of its off-the-shelf components in this exclusive interview.

As a $99 Android-based games console with an entire library of free-to-play games, Ouya certainly does things differently. This free-thinking is partly a response to the changing needs of the games industry but it also comes from an unusual production team not typically associated with the traditional games business, including hardware engineer Muffi Ghadiali whose previous work includes product management at Hewlett-Packard and Amazon’s Kindle team. Here, Ghadiali discusses the inner workings of Ouya and responds to criticisms surrounding its off-the-shelf components.

I think you will find this interview interesting. Enjoy the reading!

$99 is such a competitive price for Ouya. How have you managed to keep production costs down?

We are confident in our price point and know that this can be done. We’re using standard industry hardware. Anyone could look up the bill of materials based on the components we’ve announced and do their own calculations about the price.  This approach is just one example of how Ouya has challenged the thinking that has guided the console industry until now. Consoles don’t require a custom chipset and expensive development tools anymore. Technology has improved and it’s more available and powerful than ever before. Because we bypassed the custom chipset, we don’t need to pass additional costs onto consumers. I think Julie [Uhrman] has said it before:  What is innovative here isn’t the technology.  It’s the business model and the relationship we have with developers. Our tech is standard, but it’s wrapped in a beautiful package designed by Yves Behar, and the controller is really cool.

Why did you decide to use the Tegra 3 chip and what do you say to people who think the chip will start to show its age by 2013?

It’s no surprise that people read through our plans and talk about how they would do it differently or could do it better by doing X, Y or Z. But we are confident in our ability to provide a great gaming experience based on the specs we’ve outlined. Many of the people who question this decision are thinking in mobile terms and forget that Ouya doesn’t have a battery or a screen, so we don’t have to balance power for battery life.

We are actively working with NVidia to maximize the power of the Tegra 3. With Tegra 3 we can offer provide performance without significantly driving up costs. By integrating a current product rather than a future product we have an advantage in that we know exactly how it performs, and can get developers working on Ouya as soon as possible.

Can
you go into more detail about how you’ll be maximizing the chip’s power with NVidia?

The Tegra 3 has been traditionally optimized for mobility and battery life. Since Ouya is a console that’s always connected to a power supply, that’s not a concern for us.  We can increase graphics performance, and gamers will experience higher fidelity graphics and smoother performance.

What can you tell us about the developer environment on Ouya?

Ouya will use industry standard development tools, based on what exists for Android. By using an established standard, we are immediately accessible to the millions of developers familiar with Android today. Over time, we’ll add more.

Porting games from Android will obviously be simple but what can you do to help
developers port from other systems like PC and iOS?

We will provide porting guidelines for developers interested in adapting existing games to Ouya.  That said, we don’t intend for Ouya to be mostly for ports. We expect that developers will create new types of gameplay built on Android to capitalize on the TV, and to exploit the unique features of our controller. We’ve already had literally hundreds of developers email us offering to develop exclusive content for Ouya, there simply isn’t another console like it.

Since going live on Kickstarter you’ve obviously received an abundance of feedback.
Has any of this feedback led you to alter the design of the console or change any of your
plans?

Yes. It’s unique that future customers can weigh in on a product in development, and Ouya is especially lucky because our backers are largely comprised of both gamers and game makers. It’s an informed audience with really insightful feedback. We don’t take their comments for granted. We are always looking at feedback and making decisions based on where we are in the product development cycle. Some examples of areas where we took feedback: Ethernet (we added a port); Design of the d-pad; Button markings (to address color blind gamers).

Can you go into more detail about how you intend, if at all, to protect Ouya from piracy
and hackers?

Ouya will be just as secure as any other Android-powered device. In fact, because all the paid content will require authentication with Ouya’s servers, we will have an added layer of security. Hacking and openness are about getting what you want to do with the hardware. We embrace hackers because we expect that they will push the limits of the hardware beyond what we’ve imagined. Rooting the device won’t give you any more access to the games themselves.

Mercenary Kings On Ouya!

With five days left, Mercenary Kings has surpassed its $75,000 goal on Kickstarter, meaning that at the very least, a PC version is incoming. In addition, an Ouya version of the crafting-enhanced run-and-gun, with animations by Paul Robertson, is also on the way.
The Ouya version will be released at a later date than the PC version (it takes time to port the code).

But let's talk about the game.

You play as King, the most skilled mercenary on Earth, and you are sent to an island located in the Central American Pacific Coast to smash a ruthless criminal organization that assassinated your former team members.  Your mission might be to save the Earth, but your own motives are to uncover the truth behind their intricate conspiracy and to get revenge for your fallen comrades.
You'll need skills, a sharp eye and lightning-quick reflexes. However, you won't stand a chance if you charge blindly. You'll need to be methodical and well prepared. That’s why your backup is the world’s best experts, ready and at your disposal to help you gear up for any mission. The Gunsmith can craft firearms of choice and upgrade your body armor, the Knife Expert can build deadly custom knives, and the Shopkeeper provides you with all the supplies you’ll need.

I think the coolest thing is you can craft weapons collecting materials from the enemies that you kill!

Personally, this game reminds me a bit Metal Slug for neo-geo, do you remember?

If The Ouya Fails, You (Probably) Won’t Be Getting Your Money Back

What will happen if those 63,000 bakers won't see a return on their investment in the form of an Ouya console?

An NPR report on the service spoke with Julie Uhrman and here is what she said.

"Technically, from the Kickstarter perspective, I actually don't know the answer to that," she said. "But from a doing-the-right-thing perspective, we will treat our backers the best possible way."

That's when Ouya PR rep Tiffany Spencer says, "That's a Kickstarter policy question."
So NPR reporter Aarti Shahani asks Kickstarter founder Yancey Strickler whether, in the unlikely event the Ouya can't be delivered, would the company be able to intervene?
"You know, that would be new ground," he replied. "I don't know. I mean, no, I don't think that we would. But certainly, the kind of thing you're talking about is not a bridge that has been crossed yet. Someday it will. And you know, I think if something did go awry, it would be - it wouldn't be my favorite day."
I know the service is still in its infancy, and that with so much money and talent behind it the Ouya should arrive just fine, but those are not words that inspire confidence in Kickstarter's ability to manage things when, inevitably, something comes along that does screw people over.

Game overview : Horn

Horn is a game developed by PosphorGames. According to what developers say, the game is a mix of adventure, exploration, resolution of puzzles and combat. They also say you will experience all this stuff on your mobile devices. But, they developed new game features and details expressly for Tegra 3, so, we can suppose it will be also available on OUYA system. You play as a young blacksmith apprentice named Horn, who find his village overrun by fantastic monsters. Monster are in fact people and animals of your village, transformed by a curse and.. Guess that? You have to free them. So you'll use your sword, crossbow, musical horn and wits to explore the lands, solve puzzles, fight enemies and undo the curse.
The game is already available for iOs and Tegra 3 optimized version will be even better. If you have an Android smartphone, you can check the compatibility through the official Google Play page.
The game is powered by Unreal Engine 3, that's no peanuts!
Here below, some game screenshots and the trailer

Quick game overview : Evilot

Evilot is a puzzle/defense game for iOS, Android, PC, Linux, Mac and... OUYA! You play as Count Dolfus and you want to spend your last days in peace, but you have to defend the small retirement fund you've managed to amass from heroes and adventurers of the Kingdom of Evilot.
Main game features :

  • 50 Levels, Spread across 5 Territories, spanning over 8 hours of gameplay
  • 15 Playable units, 5 Summons
  • Soundtrack composed of 11 songs specially composed for the game

Evilot implements a combo mechanic, for example you can get a powerful unit placing 3 lower-level units on a row or column, so you have to choose between different defensive tatics. Developers say the gameplay is the strong point of this title. They want also raise funds to record the game soundtrack with a live orchestra (somewhat excessive IMO).. Here below some tracks and a video trailer. If you're interested you can visit the official kickstarter page of the project and if you want you can give them some help

Why Ouya?

Surfing the net, i noticed the most recurring question about Ouya in blogs and forums is "why should i buy the Ouya console, if its hardware and OS are the same as most of android smartphones?". There are several devices with a Tegra3 SoC, including :
  • Asus Eee Pad Transformer Prime
  • IdeaTab K2
  • LePad K2
  • Acer Iconia Tab A510
  • Acer Iconia Tab A700
  • LG Optimus 4X HD
  • HTC One X
  • ZTE Era
  • ZTE PF 100
  • ZTE T98
  • Toshiba AT270
  • Toshiba AT300 (Excite 10)
  • Asus Tablet 610
But the list will probably grow until March/April 2013. So, is Ouya a flash in the pan? I don't know, i'm just a blogger, but i have some personal thoughts.. I think the question is similar to "Why should I buy Xbox or PS if I have a powerful PC?", i mean, Ouya is a console, it has a low price, ergonomic joypad and there are lots of interesting game projects in development. If gamers will show a great interest on Ouya, also developers and software house will do. Only time will tell... And you, what do you think about?

Is Firefall targeting Ouya?

From Eurogamer.net

Outspoken ex-World of Warcraft lead and CEO of Firefall developer Red 5 Studios Mark Kern has railed against current consoles and remains skeptical of their successors, yet he's interested in developing for Ouya.

So, now you are asking yourself "Ok, but What is Firefall?"

It's an Online futuristic FPS.. in cel shading!
If you don't know what cel shading is.. in short it's a graphic technique used to mimic the style of cartoons or comic books (as you can see in the pictures below)
But stop digressing.

Here the game features:
  • Explore a massive open world with hundreds of other players fighting to push back the Melding and save humanity.
  • Change your equipment on the fly to play different battleframes depending on what your need is at that moment.
  • Collect resources and use them to expand your technology or craft new equipment to help in your fight for survival.
  • Compete head to head against other players and armies to prove your dominance in competitive arenas.
  • Join your friends online. Form armies to work towards common goals. Enjoy the benefits of a social, online game.

As in team fortress you can choose your class (in this game you choose the battleframe.. the only difference is that you can change battleframe during the match).

At the moment there are 5 battleframes.
  1. Recon
  2. Engineer
  3. Dreadnaught
  4. Biotech (medic)
  5. Assault
Having seen various videos I think it's a mix with Unreal Tournament, a little of Team fortress and Tribes Vengeance (yes you can fly!).. but without vehicles...
Damn.. i like trains vehicles.

I would like to point out the similarity between these two creatures

The first lives in firefall's world and the second.. do you remember where it lives? (..aaah.. sweet memories..)

Firefall stuff

Ringbow: next generation gaming accessory

What is Ringbow? Ringbow is a wearable ring device that enhances the way we interact with our touch-devices, designed especially for mobile Gaming. Especially doesn't mean exclusively. So I am confident that we'll use it with our Ouya very soon. In fact, Efrat Barit - the Ringbow Project founder on Kickstarter - seems to confirm that answering to a user :
@Charlie definitely, we have approached the Ouya team in order to explore Ringbow integration. It's an amazing project and we agree Ringbow can really be amazing to use with it.
Let's see what Ringbow actually can do. All you have to do is to the ring, and it will provide the funtionalities of a mouse, keyboard, and joystick simultaneously with your touch. It allows remote control of your operating system, apps, presentation tools (i think it'll be pretty cool to use it during conferences or graduate thesis presentations). It will work with Bluetooth technology.
From Ringbow Official Kickstarter page :
Since touch screens are controlled with fingers, a finger-worn tool, specifically a ring, is the natural choice for complementing them. Operating Ringbow with your thumb, in conjunction with using a touch device, enables countless new features and a much more efficient user experience. Ringbow multiplies the functionality of your finger together with allowing amazing simultaneous actions providing powerful capabilities and layers of functionality that are simply not available in today’s technologies.
Operating the ring with your thumb while using your finger to touch a device provides powerful capabilities and layers of functionality that are simply not available in today’s technologies. Ringbow multiplies the functionality of your finger together with allowing amazing simultaneous actions.
Ringbow lets you free your fingers from your device, leaving your hands available to do whatever you feel like doing: eating a sandwich, drinking a beer, high-fiving your buddy or stroking a puppy. Whatever you'd choose to do with your hands!

It will work on Android and iOS using bluetooth technology as said before, and a single charge will last about 5 hours. The Ringbow box includes :
  • The Ringbow device
  • Micro-USB cable for charging (personally, i hate to put in charge my Xbox 360's joystck batteries)
  • Ringbow control panel application for Android & iOS devices
  • Game package including games that were especially designed to support Ringbow, native control of the operating systems and a list of many games that naturally supports Ringbow and works automatically.
  • Developers kit includes the Ringbow APIs and plug-ins, technical support, creative guidelines and 24 hours assistance from Ringbow team.
Here below, some interesting videos that will show you the Ringbow potentiality, if you wanna know more you can also visit Ringbow Official website
